St. Joseph

St. Joseph, Missouri, is a community with a proud history and a strong sense of place. Founded in 1843 along the Missouri River, St. Joseph quickly became an important gateway to the American West. As thousands of pioneers traveled westward during the era of westward expansion, St. Joseph grew from a small frontier settlement into a thriving city and an important transportation and commerce center. The city is perhaps best known as the eastern starting point of the Pony Express. On April 3, 1860, the first Pony Express rider departed St. Joseph carrying mail westward toward California, making the city an important part of one of the most memorable chapters in American history.

Today, that rich history remains an important part of St. Joseph's identity. Historic landmarks such as Patee House, which served as Pony Express headquarters, and the Jesse James Home help preserve the stories of the people and events that shaped the community. At the same time, St. Joseph continues to be a close-knit community where families put down roots, support local businesses, and take pride in their hometown.
