Atchison, Kansas, is a community rich in history, character, and hometown pride. Located along the Missouri River, Atchison was one of the earliest settlements in the Kansas Territory and quickly became an important gateway to the American West. Lewis and Clark passed through the area in 1804, and just 50 years later, the town of Atchison was established as settlers and travelers moved westward. Thanks to its location along the river, Atchison became a bustling center for steamboats, wagon trains, railroads, and commerce. The city’s history also includes an important connection to the Benedictine tradition, with Benedictine monks arriving in the area in the 1850s and establishing a school that eventually became Benedictine College. Today, the college and the historic St. Benedict’s Abbey remain important parts of Atchison’s identity and community.
Atchison is perhaps best known as the hometown of Amelia Earhart, the pioneering aviator whose adventurous spirit continues to be celebrated throughout the community. Her birthplace and legacy are woven into Atchison’s identity, serving as a reminder of the courage, curiosity, and determination that have long been part of the city’s story. At the same time, modern-day Atchison remains a close-knit community where families, schools, businesses, and organizations come together to make the city a wonderful place to call home.
