What to Expect When Getting InvisalignInvisalign is slowly becoming the most innovative and popular orthodontic treatment option in the teeth straightening industry. It combines 3-D computer graphic technology to create customized aligners for your teeth. If you’re looking for a healthier, more beautiful smile, Invisalign might be the perfect solution for you! It uses no wires or bands to move teeth—just smooth, almost invisible trays that are easy to use. Invisalign aligners come with many benefits that braces do not, like increased cosmetic appeal, comfort, and flexibility. These are the four main steps for Invisalign:

  1. Initial Appointment
  2. Molding Process
  3. First Fitting
  4. Straighter Teeth

I. Initial Appointment

During you initial appointment in our St. Joseph, Gallatin, Hiawatha, or Atchison office we will determine if Invisalign is a good fit for you since it’s not a perfect solution for everyone. If Dr. Lauren Windhorst sees you as a suitable candidate for this orthodontic treatment option, we’ll take pictures, X-rays, and a digital scan of your teeth. This will allow us to make digital mock-ups and designs for your prospective Invisalign trays.

II. Molding Process

A computer model is then customized and created for your Invisalign trays after your scans are sent to the Invisalign lab. Invisalign will then use its advanced computer technology to translate these images into a series of precisely calibrated aligners.

III. First Fitting

Our orthodontist will then have you come in for your initial fitting. There will be a set of attachments (bumps of composite) placed on your teeth that will help hold your trays in. A series of Invisalign trays makes up this teeth straightening process. Each of the aligners you receive will be worn for one week, and only be removed regularly for eating, brushing your teeth, and flossing. With your trays fitted, and your aftercare program clearly explained, you're ready to go!

IV. Straighter Teeth

From then on, you’ll be wearing your aligners 22 hours a day (taking them out to eat, brush, and floss), and changing to the next set every week. You may experience some soreness the day after you switch to a new set, but with consistent wear, this should resolve quickly.
