Retention

After undergoing orthodontic treatment at Choice Orthodontics, you become the proud owner of a straighter, healthier, and more confident smile. Now that your braces are off, or if you've completed another form of treatment like Invisalign, it doesn't mean the work is done. To preserve your beautiful new smile, you now need to move on to the retention phase.

Types of Retainers

Maintaining the results you've achieved is dependent on your use of retainers, as prescribed by Choice Orthodontics. Dr. Lauren Windhorst will create retainers customized to fit your unique smile, and she will provide you with personalized instructions for how to wear them.

The retention phase will last approximately 12 months, but we recommend that you wear your retainers indefinitely. Your final orthodontic result depends on this phase, so follow through with the hard work you've put in so far by wearing your retainers as advised by your orthodontist.

There are three different retainers to choose from:

  • Clear Tray Retainers Clear tray retainers are almost invisible and help hold the alignment of your teeth by completely encompassing them. These retainers are easy to speak with, barely noticeable, meant to be worn day and night, and need to be cared for gently. Your clear tray retainers will likely need replacing in 3-5 years.
  • Plastic & Wire Retainers Orthodontists have used these retainers for many years because they are sturdy and last a long time. Initially, you may find speaking to be slightly difficult until you adapt to the retainer. Plastic and wire retainers are often used to treat kids after Phase I Treatment because they allow new permanent teeth to erupt while being worn. You can choose the color of the plastic, and different designs are available.
  • Permanent Bonded Retainers A permanent wire can be bonded on the teeth' tongue side so that it can't be seen. So that it won't interfere with your bite, this is usually placed on the lower set of teeth. This form of retention requires excellent oral hygiene, and you must also avoid hard and sticky foods that could break the bond. If your orthodontist ever removes the wire, then a removable retainer should be made for nighttime wear.
