Retention

Page Photo - RetentionAfter undergoing your orthodontic treatment at Choice Orthodontics, you become the proud owner of a straighter, more confident smile. However, just because you’ve had your braces taken off, or finished another form of treatment like Invisalign, doesn’t mean the work is done. In order to preserve your beautiful new smile, you need to move on to the retention phase.

You & Your Retainer

Maintaining the results you achieved during orthodontic treatment is dependent on your use of retainers, as prescribed by Choice Orthodontics. Dr. Lauren Windhorst will create retainers that are customized to fit your unique smile, and she will provide you with personalized instructions for how to wear them.

This is your retention phase of treatment, and it will last approximately 12 months. However, we would like you to continue wearing your retainers indefinitely. Your final orthodontic result depends on this phase, so follow through with the hard work you've put in so far by wearing your retainers as advised by your orthodontist.

You will have three kinds of retainers to choose from:

Clear Tray Retainers

Clear tray retainers are nearly invisible and help hold the alignment of your teeth by completely encompassing them. These retainers are easy to speak with, barely noticeable, meant to be worn day and night, and need to be cared for gently. Your clear tray retainers will likely need replacing in three to five years.

Plastic & Wire Retainers

Orthodontists have used these retainers for many years because they are sturdy and last a long time. Initially, you may find speaking to be slightly more difficult until you adapt to the retainers. Plastic and wire retainers are often used to treat kids after Phase I Treatment because they allow baby teeth to come out and new permanent teeth to erupt while still being worn. You can choose the color of the plastic, and different designs are available.

Permanent Bonded Retainers

A wire can be bonded to the tongue side of the teeth where it does not show. This can usually only be done on the lower set of teeth because it will not interfere with the bite. If you decide on this form of retention, you must maintain an excellent oral hygiene routine and avoid hard and sticky foods because they might break the bonding. If your orthodontist ever removes the wire then a removable retainer should be made for your nighttime wear.

Preserve Your Smile Today!

Through orthodontic treatment, you and your orthodontist work hard to get you a beautiful, straight smile. Safeguard that hard work and preserve your smile by wearing your retainers (as prescribed by your orthodontist) once you get your braces off. It is the best way secure that your new smile lasts a lifetime.
